In the present day and age people have become even more
aware of how they want to do up their homes and offices.
In fact, the aesthetics have become very important in
every strata of society. And it is not just to attract
the wide eyes of the neighbors, friends and relatives,
but also to enjoy the comforts of a well done up home.
And so, paintings and other forms of art on the wall has
become an essential. An increasing number of people are
flocking to art exhibitions, and those who can afford
the known artists are ready to invest in at least one.
There are various forms of art that have come and gone,
but the history of pop art states that it started in
Great Britain in the early 1950s and in the United
States of America in the late 1950s. What is pop art?
Pop art has been considered as one of the prominent art
movements of the last century. The prime characteristics
of this genre of art are the theme and techniques that
are derived from popular mass culture that include
advertisements and comic books. The aim of this form of
art was to use images that are popular rather than the
typical one’s used in the elitist type of art.
According to the experts who have capsuled this form of
art, consider this to have been an offshoot of an entire
pop art movement that gave rise to also pop music and
pop literature (actually known as popular literature –
basic writings that the common man could relate too).
The entire movement has been more of a western
phenomenon, and so a pop art gallery is hardly visible
in India. However, most galleries do host exhibitions of
popular art.
One visiting Britain, USA and Japan would easily find an
active pop art gallery at any point. And interestingly
the artwork is not as expensive as other forms of art.
This art is for the common man. Though some artists do
quote higher prices because of the reputation they have
earned over the years.
Through the years there have been some world renowned
pop art artists, who have contributed towards
popularizing this form of art all over the world. Some
famous names are:
- Jasper Johns
- Robert Rauschenberg
- Roy Lichtenstein
- Andy Warhol
- James Rosenquist
- Eduardo Arroyo
- Alfredo Alcaín
- Kaikai Kiki
- Yoshitomo Nara
- Takashi Murakami
