Today we are living in a day and age when there seems to be no dominating trend; or rather the trend seems to a matter of: ‘Do what you like’. And this is why this age is being considered the modern age – a time in human history when there is no particular theme dominating the scene, apart from the theme of the mind, as it is.

To explain this further, observe the modern art styles. Is there any prevalent feature that comes to mind? None, except for the fact that it is all-creative. The artists are encouraged to put onto canvas the images of the mind and then the art lovers are encouraged to enjoy the artwork with no pre-conceived notions, but let their perceptions result from spontaneity of vision contact.

The outstanding feature of modern day art is that there is nothing monotonous in each painting, sketch or digital artwork, etc. One can take a look at the artwork each day with a new perception and understanding of it. And most of the works are based on creating an optical illusion that makes one meditate on the painting, rather than concentrate. This is the primary difference between modern art and the thematic art of the past.

However, this does not mean that artists do not practice the old forms of art. There are those who do create portraits, landscapes, seascapes, etc., in accordance to the traditional methods. And they do have a high selling value. So, another aspect of modern day appreciation of artworks is that everything created has a market value and there is space for so many more creations.

There are some modern art galleries that deal and promote only this genre of art. The lighting and the setting of such galleries are different from the others. In fact, these galleries are flexible and permit experimental types of exhibitions, or rather thematic exhibitions. For instance, some artists have a poetry reading session along with servings of cheese and some beverage. The poems read relate to the paintings. A point in note here is the art galleries of oil paintings tend to shy away from modern art, because of the fact that former is a more traditional and conservative form of art, whereas the latter is more progressive and bold.

Modern abstract art is generally used for psychological tests, because the perceptions of people viewing these pictures help psychologists and psychiatrists understand the mindset of their clients. For instance, for a person disturbed a particular abstract picture may represent a violent scene; whereas for an emotionally sound person it maybe something representing vibrancy and life.

Another distinguishing factor that stands out in modern art paintings is the use of vibrant and bold colors. Not too much of the shading effect is used. Its more a play of solid strokes. No matter what form of art, it is all about creativity.
