Not
many consider owning an art gallery, or for that matter
dealing in art to be a lucrative business. But this was
the thought that proved right over a decade ago. Things
have been changing for the better in the last decade,
with increasing number of people across the world
delving into the arts. This not only implies the
increasing number of artists and painters, but also the
number of people purchasing and appreciating art. And
keeping this in mind there is an increasing demand for
dealers and galleries.
The art gallery business is a creative one and meant for
those who are interested in art as a subject, and more
so those who understand the various aspects of art.
However, there could be two types of business aspects
here – the investor and the dealer. There are people,
who invest in properties that they can convert into a
gallery and reap the returns in the form of rent earned.
They are not concerned with the artist or the work; it
is just how much rent comes back.
The dealer-cum-gallery owner, or just a dealer, is
concerned with the artist being displayed and exhibited.
They are more particular about the value of the artwork
and the credibility of the artist. They are not just
focused on the returns, but the over all package that
includes their reputation as a connoisseur. They would
not exhibit someone’s work for the need of an income,
but because the work has credibility to be sold at
whatever price.
Those into the business have various earning models.
Some may have an art gallery business plan to deal in
only one particular genre of artwork. Some may have a
plan to auction paintings to support a charity. There
are some who open art galleries accepting new works, in
order to launch new artists, taking entire
responsibility for the exhibition and also the
publicity. There are some of those who only exhibit the
work of renowned celebrity artists, who earn in Lakhs
for the paintings. There are also those who do not
limited themselves to a particular plan and promote are
for the sake of art.
When starting an art gallery, one needs to take into
account the location and the interior dimensions. These
are the prime factors that determine the success of a
gallery. For instance, in Mumbai the cultural center of
the city is considered to be Colaba, which houses the
maximum galleries in any one area. Opening a gallery in
a residential area will not attract too many people and
art lovers are never too keen to travel to out of the
way areas that are not art-famous, so to speak.
